October Camera Club Outing - DuPont State Forest In The Land of Waterfalls
If you haven't been to DuPont State Forest in North Carolina you should take advantage of the October Camera Club trip for Tour de Falls on October 18.
http://www.dupontforest.com/tour-de-falls-october-18th-19th-2014/
There are several spectacular waterfalls in the park. During the October 18 & 19 weekend the Friends of DuPont run shuttle buses that take people right to each fall. No hiking required! It is their fund raising event and they ask for a $12 donation to ride the bus. The fall colors should be looking good that weekend.
Jim Rigsby will be leading this trip. It's an all day trip. Meet at the Colonial Heights Ingles parking lot between McDonalds and the Bank at 7:30 AM on Saturday October 18.. A second meeting place is the Walmar in Erwin at 8:00 AM. It's about a 2 hour drive from Kingsport so you'll want to car pool as much as possible. We did this trip a few years ago and got back in the evening after having dinner on the way home.
Jim's contact info is jrigsby@eastman.com and his cell phone is 423-863-6727. It will be good to let him know if you plan on going on this trip and where you plan on meeting. Give him a call if you're going to be late Saturday morning so you don't get left behind.

Don't Forget Camera Club Outing to South Holston Dam Saturday
We will be heading up to South Holston Dam Saturday to see what photographic opportunities can be found.
This is one of our few afternoon outings. We will meet in Colonial Heights at Ingles Grocery Store Parking lot 4:30 PM. We will park near McDonalds and carpool from there. It will take about 40 minutes to drive to South Holston Dam so if you plan on meeting us there you should be there around 5:10 - 5:20.
Important - Don't forget to bring a picnic dinner and drink to eat at the dam. We'll spend some time eating and socializing before starting our walk about.
The weather forecast calls for a warm day with partly cloudy skies. You should expect harsh lighting conditions. Think about making the most of these lighting conditions by converting your photos to black and white. See the August issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine for some good info on shooting black and white.
Sunset is around 8:00. If you are still there, the top of the dam is a good spot to shoot a sunset.
If you missed it, here another blog about the outing - http://thesiggins.blogspot.com/2014/08/scouting-for-ideas.html
If you have questions, send an email to Richard Siggins.

Here's your chance to "shoot the moon" this weekend
The next Supermoon occurs this Sunday evening. If the weather cooperates, it will be a great chance to photograph the moon.
http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2014/08/07/catch-the-extra-supermoon-this-weekend/
Here's some suggestions that will improve your chance of getting a killer moon shot.
Have fun and show us what you get.
http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2014/08/07/catch-the-extra-supermoon-this-weekend/
Here's some suggestions that will improve your chance of getting a killer moon shot.
- Shoot when the moon is first rising Sunday evening, which is be at 8:14 PM in Kingsport. That way the moon will "appear" larger and will have a warmer color. It will also allow you to include other objects in your composition. The moon by itself on a black sky is not as interesting as it could be.
Of course, you can also photograph it when it's setting at 3:11 AM. - Use a tripod. Your exposure may be too long to hand hold your camera. The photo above was shot at f/13, ISO 125 and 1.6 seconds.
- Set your camera to manual mode, the ISO at 100, aperture around f/11, shutter speed around 1/125. If the lowest ISO you can use is 200 then slow the shutter speed to 1/60. These are suggested starting points. You may need to adjust. Be sure to check your histogram to make sure the moon is not over exposed.
- Set your camera/lens to manual focus and set the focus at infinity. Most lenses will go past infinity. Back it off to the mark on the lens near infinity. If your camera has live view use it to manually focus.
- Use a shutter release cable or delay timer to avoid camera movement.
Set focus as shown on left, not right |

Topics for July 17 and August 21 Camera Club Meetings
We have a couple good topics for the next two meetings
July 17 - Color Balancing
Allan Barnett will be covering color/white balancing your photos. This will entail use of both in camera and software tools to provide a starting point in your workflow. The camera is very precise, it records exactly what it sees while your brain adjusts to the lighting automatically. By using any of the tool presented this will take the guess game out of the equation and saves time in processing your images, insuring you get the same results every time on all your cameras.August 21 - Blending Multiple Exposures
Kent Ervin will show some of the techniques he uses to:- Blend images of different exposures together in order to create a natural looking image with a greater dynamic range.
- Blend a series of images where the focus point is different in order to create an image with a greater depth of field - this is a common approach when creating a macro image.
- Blend a series of images for night photography image stacking in order to create an image with a longer exposure than is possible with a single frame.
- Images with long star trails require very long exposures, however the ambient light of a scene is often intense enough to limit the exposure to something much shorter. The sky and foreground thus often require two radically different exposures. The solution to this dilema is image stacking! Image staking allows you to take a lot of shorter exposures and combine them for a longer total exposure time with star trails.
Both meetings are in Room 219 of the Eastman Employee Center starting at 6:30 PM. Google map to the Employee Center.

Eastman Camera Club Meeting Thursday June 19
This month's program is on post processing - the tools we use and time we spend on our images once we get home from a shoot. Belinda Bridwell and Richard Siggins will demonstrate some editing
techniques that they use. As there is no right way to take a photo, there is also no one right way to edit a photo. You will learn from the different approaches and techniques Belinda and Richard use.
The demonstrations will be done using Lightroom and the Nik Suite of software, but they can be applied to any photo editing tool.
Come out to Room 219 in the Eastman Employee Center at 6:30 Thursday evening. We hope to see you there.

Eastman Camera Club joins Camera Club Council of Tennessee
As a club member of the Camera Club Council of Tennessee (3CT) our members can participant in their special events and contests. The purpose of the Council is to foster a spirit of fellowship, sharing, and competitiveness among member clubs. In the last two years they have hosted four weekend field trips one of which included a workshop, and one Interclub Photo Contest. Plans are in the works for at least two trips this year and another contest.
3CT is a member of PSA and the 3CT In Focus Newsletter took second place in 2012 and first place in 2013 for nationwide PSA Council member newsletters. The newsletter features a section that shares program/speaker information. This can be a great resource for those club members who wouldn't mind traveling to another club to hear a particular speaker. They also report on special events, for example workshops, that members might be interested in attending, not to mention the fun and interesting types of activities and projects other clubs offer that might prove to be something our group might want to try. Here is a link to their latest newsletter: http://www.3ct.org/wp-content/uploads/Newsletters/Vol-3_4-April-2014.pdf
3CT now offers lifetime memberships for $25.00 per person for those who do not belong to camera clubs and for club members who just want to individually support the Council.
You can now sign-up and pay right online at http://www.3ct.org/membership/club-membership-details/ If you prefer to pay by check: Make it out to Camera Club Council of Tennessee and mail it to Les Milligan, Treasurer at 2850 Pen Hook Road, Monterey, TN. 38574.

WORKSHOP PRESENTATION--May 3-4--Knoxville
From Larry Perry in Knoxville -
This program could be the highlight of the year for area photographers. If you haven't already signed up for the Saturday program time is limited and you should do so NOW!
Winston Hall is an incredible teacher...just look at what some of the local photographers say about him:
Bob Turney: In the
last number of years I have attended numerous Workshops with Winston
Hall. Outstanding Photographer, Outstanding Teacher, and a
really fun person to be with! I am pretty choosy who I listen to when it
comes to photography and I can easily say that Winston is one of the
best instructors I have heard. I guarantee you will learn a lot
regardless of your skill level. I plan to be there to learn more!!!
Jack Goodwin: Winston's workshops are a
lot of fun, and very insightful. Here's a tip I picked up during his
Slot Canyon Workshop two years ago. I was struggling with the problem
of capturing a bit of blue sky peaking through the depths of a canyon.
I was bracketing exposures from -3 stops to +3 stops for HDR. Because
the meter was seeing a lot of dark canyon and very little sky, the sky
was clipping, even at -3 stops. Winston suggested using exposure
compensation together with bracketing. That shifted the bracketing
range to be from -4 stops to +2 stops, enough to bring the sky into
range while still opening shadows sufficiently to give good results
when the images were combined.C an't wait to see what I learn next week
from Winston!
Mike Boniol (Crossville): I have attended several photography workshops by Winston Hall including photographing lighthouses in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Lightroom, and one on my Nikon camera. He is outstanding and I rate him as one of the top photographers and photo teachers in the country. He will conduct an outstanding workshop for SANP and I will be attending!
